The Housing Aid for Older People Scheme is available to assist older people living in poor housing conditions to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out. The scheme is administered by local authorities.
The effective maximum grant under the scheme is €9,000, which may cover up to 95% of the approved cost of works.
This grant is for people 66 years old or more to do essential repairs, so that they can continue to live in their own home. Sometimes this grant can be paid to people under 66 years old, but only in cases of hardship.
Applicants will be assessed on the basis of all household income, that is, the annual gross income of all household members aged 18 years or over (or aged 23 years or over if in full time education) in the previous tax year.
The registered property owner’s income (and spouse) may also be included. More detail in relation to this is provided on the single application form available below.
The effective maximum grant of €9,000 to cover up to 95% of the cost of works, may be available to applicants with gross household incomes of up to €30,000 per annum, tapering to 30% for applicants with gross household incomes of between €50,001 to €60,000 per annum. The same means test will apply in every local authority area and is in line with the criteria for assessment of need for social housing.
You can use this grant to do essential repairs. This could be to:
- help repair or replace the roof
- upgrade the electrical wiring
- repair or replace doors and windows
- provide central heating (where there is no central heating or it is broken beyond economic repair)
